The Gwynn’s Island bridge was closed to vehicular traffic for hours on Sunday afternoon, and boats will be unable to pass through The Narrows until at least this weekend.
VDOT reports that the shaft used to swing the bridge open broke last weekend while the bridge was in the open position.
After some creative manouvering, the bridge was closed so that at least vehicles could pass over it. Two private boat owners volunteered to use their vessels to pull the bridge shut, however it can’t open for water traffic until it’s repaired.
The broken part was being removed from the bridge Monday morning, and all of its pieces were being sent off to be fixed or if that’s not possible, a new shaft will have to be made to replace it.
