A federal indictment against 53 year old William Hooper of Mathews was unsealed this week… on Wednesday… in Newport News. The Gazette Journal (www.gazettejournal.net) reports that Hooper was indicted earlier this month by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to produce child pornography, production of child pornography, and two counts of coercion and enticement of a child. The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office now says a joint investigation that lasted several months, involved them, along with the Department of Homeland Security. On May 8th, officers from the sheriff’s office, along with Homeland Security, the U.S. Marshal’s Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard, all decended upon Hooper’s home on Williams Wharf Road, where he was arrested. If convicted, Hooper now faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison on the conspiracy and production charges… and at least 10 years on the coercion and enticement charges. Hooper was originally arrested last November in Maryland by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and was held there as a fugitive from justice before being extradited to Mathews County in December, where he was then charged with a long list of felonies involving children. In February, after spending time behind bars, he requested and was granted bail on grounds that he was in failing health. He has since been under home confinement, and has been monitored.
