Closing arguments are over in a trial involving Virginia’s abortion laws. A group including Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights is challenging a law that bans physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners from performing an abortion in the first trimester. Another section of the law challenged is a requirement to have an ultrasound performed less than 24 hours before an abortion. U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson told attorneys yesterday that they have two weeks to file briefs before he could possibly rule on the case.
