The Virginia Department of Health reports the first case of a new COVID-19 variant found in the United Kingdom was identified in a sample from an adult resident of Northern Virginia with no reported recent travel history. The variant was first discovered in late 2020 and is associated with increased person-to-person transmission of COVID-19. Around 200 cases are reported amongst 23 states. Public health officials are studying these variants quickly to learn more to control their spread.
