Governor Wants To Abolish Death Penalty

Governor Ralph Northam plans to introduce a bill abolishing the death penalty in Virginia. He told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he’s felt strongly about it for a long time, and it would be in-line with his efforts to ensure equity and reform the criminal justice system. The state has conducted 113 executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. There are currently only two men on death row in Norfolk whose sentences would be changed to life in prison if the measure becomes law. If it passes, Virginia would become the first Southern state to end capital punishment.
