Va. Could Prohibit Cops From Using Facial Recognition Technology

A bill on Gov. Ralph Northam’s desk would prohibit police departments throughout Virginia from using facial recognition technology but it’s not known if Northam will sign the measure. It bans the purchase or use of facial recognition technology unless it is expressly authorized by the state legislature. Supporters say the bill stemmed from reports some agencies were using a facial recognition app to find suspects without notifying officials of its use. If Northam signs the ban it would go into effect on July 1st.
