The Mathews County Building Department is working on renovations at the Tompkins Cottage Museum to address repair damage sustained over the years. Officials say moisture issues have plagued the cottage in part due to its location just 5 feet above sea level and also due to design flaws such as not having a subfloor. Once crews finish the exterior work the cottage will be painted. Interior repairs are also being planned.
