The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors is looking into an alternative to discharging treated wastewater into surface water such as rivers or lakes. According to the Southside Sentinel the board is looking into a process called “land application” where treated wastewater is used for irrigation on crops not used for human consumption. The board contracted with a engineering consulting firm to study options for wastewater treatment, including land application.
