The Mathews County School Board decides to rename the elementary school from “Lee-Jackson Elementary” to “Mathews Elementary School”. According to the Gazette-Journal the board voted unanimously to approve the new name during Tuesday night’s meeting. An ad-hoc committee had suggested naming the building “Bay Haven Elementary” but a community survey found that name was not popular with respondents favoring the Mathews Elementary name. The names of the two Confederate generals were removed from the building last summer.
