Essex County is getting 3 new historical markers. According to Northern Neeck News the markers approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources document facets of African-American history. The new markers will be placed at Angel Visit Baptist Church, Route 17 near Center Cross to memorialize the Thomas Washington lynching and at the former Rappahannock Industrial Academy site. Existing markers memorialize blues musician William Moore and the role played by African Americans in the War of 1812.
