Essex and Middlesex Counties are awarded grants to purchase electric school buses which will replace existing diesel-fueled vehicles. According to Governor Ralph Northam’s office the money for those 2 districts and 17 others in the Commonwealth comes from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust, administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The settlement reached with the automaker in 2016 funds investments in clean energy alternatives, which are intended to reduce harmful vehicle pollution.
