The governors of Virginia and Maryland along with Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser marked the start of the process to reclaim gravestones dumped to control erosion on the Potomac River. The stones were at the Columbian Harmony Cemetery and in 1960 the burial ground was relocated so a commercial development could proceed with the gravestones being sold or given away. The first 55 headstones to be reunited with the remains they belong to are being taken to a new Landover, Maryland memorial park.
