New Monument Marks The End Of Slavery

There’s a new monument in Virginia’s capital commemorating the end of slavery. On Wednesday the Emancipation and Freedom Monument was unveiled in Brown’s Island which has two 12-foot bronze statues depicting a man and a woman carrying an infant newly freed from slavery. The pedestal includes the names and biographies of 10 Black Virginians who contributed to the fight for liberty before and after emancipation. Those names were selected by the Virginia Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission from over 100 nominations.
