Virginia’s initial jobless claim numbers rose by 300% last week. According to the Virginia Employment Commission the increase may be the result of the ending of federal benefits earlier this month. Claims had dropped by nearly 40% 2 weks ago. The majority of the claimants who filed last week were in the health care and social assistance; administrative and waste services; retail; and accommodations/food service industries. Initial claims nationwide were also up last week.
