Researchers are looking for help in finding information on a black man lynched in Essex County in March 1896 for the alleged attempted assault of a young white girl. The Southside Sentinel reports a group applied for and recently received approval from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for a historical marker for the Thomas Washington lynching. The researchers are seeking any present-day descendents of Washington and if you have any information call 804-651-8753. The marker will be dedicated later this year.
