The Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team announced it will use its motel voucher program instead of opening an emergency shelter this winter. Executive director Rev. Kristie Askew tells the Gazette-Journal the program has provided temporary living spaces for more than 160 people in Gloucester, Tappahannock and Westmoreland Counties. Askew says it was COVID-19 that made the team stop running a shelter during the colder months. The motel vouchers are grant funded through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
