Sales tax revenues are up in Gloucester and Mathews Counties but it’s not because of a shopping boom at area merchants. According to the Gazette-Journal the increase is due to more people shopping online. Sales taxes that are charged on internet purchases are returned to the home state, Gloucester and Mathews sales tax revenues for the first- and second-quarter of 2021 were higher than the first two quarters of any other year over the past decade.
