Essex County is getting a new historical marker. According to the Southside Sentinel the marker on Tidewater Trail in Center Cross memorializes Thomas Washington who was lynched in March 1896 for the alleged attempted assault of a young white girl. It is one of a very few markers that denotes the lynching of a specific African American in Virginia. The marker will be dedicated Dec. 18 at 11:00 a.m.
