A list of the first African-American voters to cast ballots after the 14th amendment passed is now online. According to the Gazette-Journal the Mathews County Historical Society published the list to expand public awareness of the breadth and depth of the county’s archival records. There are more than 300 names on the list at mathewscountyhistoricalsociety.org. The first election took place in October of 1867 a year after the amendment passed.
