The Virginia Department of Health reports the new Omicron COVID-19 variant known as BA.2 has been detected. It’s now said to be in one of 5 coronavirus cases. Officials say BA.2 spreads even faster than Omicron and is harder to detect than the original variant. They also say the new variant isn’t expected to cause a case surge because Virginia has a high level of immunity through vaccinations and past omicron cases.
