5 area counties make it into data aggregator Stacker’s list of the top 50 rural counties in Virginia. Mathews County is #28, Middlesex County is #27, Lancaster County is #26,
Northumberland County is #23 and Richmond County is #20. Stacker compiled the list using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and were ranked are ranked by the percent of land area that is rural. Highland County was ranked as the most rural county.
