VEC Recovering Fradulent Unemployment Claims

The Virginia Employment Commission is continuing to work on recovering fraudulent unemployment claims resulting from identity theft. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch the commission estimated that over 83,000 improper claims were made since the pandemic began totaling over $470 million. VEC Commissioner Carrie Roth told a General Assembly oversight committee one factor was a cyberattack that occurred right after the agency’s new software system went online last November.
