Early screening key for lung cancer

November is observed as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, 228,000 Americans are diagnosed and 160,000 die from lung cancer. Fatima Javier Wong, D.O., at Riverside Health System, says that those age 50 to 80 years old or those who who have smoked one pack of cigarettes per day for 20-30 years should get screened for lung cancer. Early screening for lung cancer increases the patient’s likelihood of successful treatment, according to Wong. Common risk factors for lung cancer include smoking, age, exposure to radon, family history and personal experience with lung disease.
