First Lady Suzanne Youngkin is pushing for a statewide fentanyl awareness campaign and tougher penalties to help deter the increase in the deadly drug’s use. Last year almost 15,000 people overdosed in Virginia and about 2,600 died. Officials say fentanyl was responsible for 76% of those deaths.The General Assembly is considering a bill allowing prosecutors to charge dealers with first-degree murder for an overdose death and one classifying fentanyl as a weapon of terrorism.
