The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality issued a drought watch advisory for the Northern Coastal Plain region which includes Essex, Richmond, Westmoreland, Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, Lancaster, and Northumberland counties. The advisory is to increase awareness of conditions and facilitate preparation for drought when indicators in the Drought Assessment and Response Plan have been met. Officials say the area received less than half of the normal precipitation amounts within the last 60 days.
