More people are working post pandemic in Virginia. In the latest filing week, the Virginia Employment Commission reports that the week ending April 8 had fewer unemployment claims from the week before, marking a year long trend in the Commonwealth. Continued weeks claimed totaled 11,681, a decrease of 142 claims from the week before but an increase of 68 percent from the same week in 2022. Staunton and Waynesboro’s local unemployment rate was 2.6 in February 2023, down from 3 percent in January 2023 and a slight increase from 2.5 percent in February 2022.
