$6M In Federal Funding Released To Farmers & Food Banks

Last week the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services released over $6 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture funds to buy food products from local farmers to distribute to food-insecure populations. According to the Virginia Mercury the release was delayed by several months and one contributing factor was language in the budget. The department made the appropriation request in January but the funds had to be authorized as part of the budget amendment process.
