Middlesex County Public Schools officials announced its computer systems were affected by a “ransomware” attack where data gets encrypted and is inaccessible by the owner. The attacker demands a monetary ransom to release the data back to the owner. According to the Southside Sentinel a ransomware group claimed on the “dark web” to have hacked the MCPS website and stole data. Superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz tells the newspaper the impact on daily operations has been minimal.
