Kilmarnock Planning Commission, at its most recent meeting, spent some time discussing how to maintain the Steptoe’s District character and charm. According to the Rappahanock Record, the zoning administrator said the objectives outlined by the commission previously were to create a means to protect and maintain “the unique charm, appearance and architecture” of the Steptoe’s overlay district. Member Barbara Ettner noted a solid next step in the process of drafting related regulations would be to research other cities and towns similar to Kilmarnock with architectural and aesthetic standards and see what kinds of regulations they pose and how they are enforced.
Economic development coordinator Sharon Phillips said as of now, she does not know of any big franchise or formula businesses in the pipeline for Steptoe’s District; however, the next possible location for one would likely be the Irvington Road commercial property for sale that suffered from the April 2022 fire.
