The Northumberland County boathouse ordinance was discussed at a recent meeting, including the possible inclusion of fabric canopies on boat lifts. The current ordinance requires that all materials be painted, stained or salt treated, but canopies are constructed with metal framing. Wilkins-Corey also suggested a conditional use for the canopies to ensure they would be replaced when worn. Currently, boathouses are a permitted use, or as a conditional use when objections are raised or the size exceeds 700 square feet. The Rappahannock Record reports zoning administrator Philip Marston indicated that suggestion could be addressed by adding a line to require a conditional use permit when materials do not meet the stated requirements. The commission voted 9-0 to seek permission from the board of supervisors to revise the ordinance.
