An agreement between Essex County and an organization that addresses a variety of issues — including food insecurity — will allow for the creation of a community garden/ food distribution location in Tappahannock. According to the Rappahannock Times, the Essex County Board of Supervisors has unanimously voted to lease to Just Harvest vacant and unimproved property consisting of approximately 0.12 acre along Duke Street. Just Harvest is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering Black, Indigenous and marginalized communities to achieve independence and autonomy through food sovereignty and community connectivity. According to the lease agreement, Just Harvest must utilize the property for the development, operation, and management of a community garden and related structures for demonstration, educational, and charitable purposes.
