A GoFundMe account has been established for former Essex County School Board Chairman Denise Hammond who was severely injured while on an overseas cruise. According to the Rappahannock Times, the effort is being spearheaded by Hammond’s daughter, Rachel Matthews. A $100,000 fundraising goal has been set. Hammond was on the cruise in the Pacific Ocean when she fell and fractured a hip and an arm on October 4, according to the GoFundMe effort. After x-rays and consultations between the ship’s emergency room doctor and orthopedic specialists in the U.S., it was determined that she will need surgery to repair her hip. The cost of Hammond’s medical evacuation is estimated to be about $60,000.
