Middlesex Supervisors Recommend Abandoning Stormont Road

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted, 3-1, to recommend to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to abandon a portion of Stormont Road (Route 629) over Healy’s Millpond dam. The Southside Sentinel reports the vote had Jamaica District Supervisor Wayne Jessie, Harmony Village Supervisor Reggie Williams and Pinetop District Supervisor Lud Kimbrough voting to abandon, while Saluda District board member Don Harris voted no on the issue. The Hartfield District supervisor seat is currently vacant. The road was closed in 2006 when the spillway box culvert to the dam failed a six-month VDOT inspection. VDOT officials said then the highway agency was responsible for the road easement but not the dam beneath it and until that was fixed the road would remain closed.
