Montross Gets First Cigarette Tax Check

The Town of Montross receives just over $6,200 as its first cigarette-tax payment. According to Westmoreland News the 2-cent-per-cigarette levy is collected by the Chesapeake Bay Region Cigarette Tax Board which takes a 5% commission. The Board collects for several municipalities and counties with each locality setting its own tax rate. Town Manager Patricia Lewis says the next payment may be higher as some businesses were not included due to a 90-day leeway for beginning tax collection.
