The time capsule found in the base of the former Robert E. Lee statue in Richmond was opened on Wednesday. Among the items inside were an 1875 almanac, a pair of books, a cloth envelope and a coin. It took several hours to open the box made of lead because it was heavily corroded. The capsule’s interior was wet so actions to preserve the documents are being taken.
