The Federal Aviation Administration granted Dominion Energy a pivotal approval to fly drones beyond visual line of sight for inspecting power generation facilities. According to a news release Dominion obtained the waiver in partnership with the drone’s manufacturer. Manager of unmanned systems programs Nate Robie says a 20-minute inspection by a battery-powered drone will increase safety for colleagues, who will no longer need to rappel down the side of a structure. It will also save time during inspection-related preparations.
