The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a ban on menthol cigarettes in the United States (U.S.), which could impact local cigarette tax revenues for Middlesex County and the Town of Urbanna. Menthol cigarettes currently account for 35% of cigarette tax revenues across the nation. Since joining the Chesapeake Bay Region Cigarette Tax Board in July 2021, Middlesex County and the Town of Urbanna have been collecting cigarette tax revenues through the tax board. The county is collecting about $200,000 annually in cigarette taxes while the town receives about $11,000 annually. The revenues for the county go into the general fund, while proceeds for the town go towards the preservation and upkeep of the circa-1766 James Mills Scottish Factor Store, which houses the town’s visitors center and museum.
