Northam Commemorates 50th Anniversary of the Virginia Constitution

Governor Ralph Northam visited the Library of Virginia on Tuesday to commemorate 50 years since the current Virginia Constitution took effect on July 1, 1971. That document eliminated the poll tax, banned racially segregated schools, provided free public education for every school-aged child, and prohibited governmental discrimination based on race, color, national origin or sex. Virginia adopted its first Constitution on June 29, 1776. The public can view original copies of Virginia’s 4 constitutions at the Library of Virginia in Richmond.
